Dry skin

The largest organ in the body, your skin is quite remarkable.

Responsible for protecting your body from external irritants, allergens and micro-organisms, your skin provides a barrier between you and the outside world. The skin barrier also works to control water loss, keeping your skin soft.

However, in some cases the skin barrier becomes compromised, causing dry skin. When the skin’s barrier is compromised, water loss is experienced, leading to dry skin as well as leaving it vulnerable to external factors.

Additionally, dry skin may also cause you to feel itchy. If that itch is then scratched, skin damage can occur, in some cases resulting in infection and inflammation.

As well as common skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and ichthyosis, there are many other circumstances which can result in dry skin symptoms:

  • As the skin ages, the barrier function weakens, causing water loss. This water loss, combined with an increased vulnerability to external factors, causes the skin to become dry.

In addition to dryness, the skin can also become thinner and therefore more fragile with age.

Emollin emollient spray allows the treatment of dry skin, without the need to rub fragile skin, which could otherwise result in skin tears and damage.

  • Lymphoedema is chronic condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues due to a build-up of fluid. It can occur in any part of the body, but most commonly within the arms and legs.

Lymphoedema often makes the skin dry and itchy, which puts you at risk of cracks and infection. Emollin emollient spray can help to keep the skin soft and supple and the spray application makes it easy to reach the lower legs.

  • Venous leg ulcers are open wounds in the lower leg, caused by high blood pressure in the veins.

Alongside the ulcer, skin changes are common in the lower leg such as inflammation, thickened skin, dryness and scaling.

Using an emollient on the skin surrounding the ulcer will help to soften, soothe and hydrate the skin. Emollin has the added benefit of it’s spray-on delivery, making reaching the lower legs easy. In addition, it contains no preservatives or additives, reducing the risk of irritation.

  • People living with diabetes are at increased risk of having dry skin, due to high blood sugar levels. If this dry skin becomes cracked, the body is left vulnerable to germs entering and causing infection.

Skin issues can develop into serious complications in diabetics, such as diabetic foot ulcers, which in extreme circumstances can lead to amputation.

Maintaining a good skin care routine, including using an emollient to keep skin soft and protect the skin barrier is vital for people living with Diabetes.

Emollin spray makes it easy to reach areas often affected by dry skin, such as the lower legs.

  • Radiation dermatitis is a common side effect of radiotherapy. As well as becoming dry, skin can also become extremely tender and fragile. Emollin can provide the soothing, protective benefits of an emollient, delivered in a spray-on application, perfect for fragile, tender skin.

  • Lichen sclerosus causes itchy, white, fragile patches anywhere on the skin, but most frequently on the genitals.

The areas of the skin affected are easily damaged and may bleed or cause pain if rubbed or scratched.

While it cannot be cured, steroid cream is usually prescribed to help to relieve symptoms. Using an emollient such as Emollin helps to soothe and protect the skin, providing a barrier from exposure to urine.
